The correct answer to the scenario above is: "Yes Mr Bear, you can have my bike. I will happily walk back to my car."
Please do not harrass or feed the bears. Use extra caution around bear cubs. Momma bears will shoo cubs up a tree if she feels threatened. Leave the area immediately.
The black bear at Carvins Cove are not aggressive and just want to be left alone. But they will attack to protect cubs, a food source or if they feel threatened.
When bears feel threatened they will make "false charges" trying to scare you away. If a bear challenges you start backing away without taking your eyes off the bear and try to leave the area.
If you are stuck and cannot leave the area or if the bear gets closer after each charge, gather in a group with arms outstretched, or if you are only one person, pick up your bike to make yourself look bigger and make LOTS of noise. That should scare off the bear and give you time to leave the area.
Keep dogs on leash at all times

Biking/ Hiking at dawn or dusk may increase your chances of meeting a bear.

If you see a bear and it hasn't seen you, leave the area calmly.
While moving away, talk to help the bear discover your presence.
Give the bear plenty of room to escape
If you have a close encounter, back away slowly while facing the bear.
If on a trail, step off on the downhill side and slowly leave the area.
If a bear makes contact, fight back
Run from a bear!
Running may prompt the bear to chase
No human can outrun a bear
Approach a bear for a selfie (or any other reason)
Feed bears or allow bears access to any human related food sources
